,, we begin with breaking newsn the breaking news.. the caldecott tunnel just reopened... after a fiery crash... fil bore with smok good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. the caldecott tunnel just reopened after a fire ee crash filled the eastbound bore with smoke forcing dozens to run out to safety. anne makovec is live at the scene with the very latest.

ann. >> reporter: all bores are re- open. this was a traffic mess a half hour ago. we are at the 13 interchange at highway 24. look at the people who got out of this tunnel as it was filling with smoke this morning after a car caught fire in the eastbound bore of the caldecott tunnel just before 10 a.m. smoke started taking over. so people just left their cars and walked out of the tunneling. the tunnel's ventilation system kicked in but it was a very scary situation for drivers inside. here's how one describes it. >> i just was two cars behind the fire. the chp says to stay in the car and close the windows. but cars exploded so i walked out. it was smoky in there. it was terrible. really. >> reporter: eight people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. they will be okay.

that was done out of an abundance of caution. all bores are open. the number one bore has one closed out because a burned-out car is still there. there are hanging power lines. they should return to normal soon. live in oakland, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> it doesn't look too bad behind you but it must have made a mess with traffic. >> yeah. it was a real nightmare. traffic backed up quickly. we have some shots from chopper 5 overhead. that's when traffic was backed up to the broadway exhibit along highway 24 and westbound it was backed up all the way through orinda. we have some breaking news out of los angeles at this hour. a man wearing camouflage armed with a semi-automatic weapon opened fire inside an l.a.x. terminal and killed a tsa officer. three or four other tsa employees were injured in the

shooting. you can see some emergency personnel down below. rushing people to ambulances outside. they exchanged gunfire. ground stop is in effect for l.a.x. so that means flights from other cities headed to the airport in los angeles are not taking off. let's listen in. there's a press conference going on now. >> the folks here today coordinating are folks who when they hear those gunshots run towards them and save lives. to watch the command work together today is a inspiring. the people of los angeles are in good hands. i want to thank the public for patience and cooperation and ask for that to kin throughout the day. thank you. [ inaudible ] number of fatalities? i don't know yet. the fire department is rectifying all that

information. >> can you explain why the fbi is the lead agency? >> this is an airport that has federal jurisdiction. we have assets here on board. it's a unified command involving everybody but the investigative lead has been decided to be taken by the fbi. >> is the shooter a federal employee? >> i don't know. >> was he ever? >> i don't know. >> does the fbi know? [ inaudible ] >> not that i'm aware of. >> there were earlier reports of multiple suspects as recently -- [ inaudible ] [ loud airplane-helicopter noise ] >> in a dynamic situation where things unfold so rapidly and many people come in, there is always chaos in any type of event like this. and there's always the -- everybody is always thinking forward as to whether or not there's additional suspects.

there is only one know that we know right now as the active shooter in our terminal. i want to follow up a little on what the mayor said. >> a man just in camouflage went in with a rifle and took aim at a tsa right where they do the security checks. no confirmation on how many fatalities. we do hear one, unconfirmed, and three or four may have been injured. the shooter is in custody. that's the latest at l.a.x. we are live also at mineta san jos international airport. flights are diverted to san jose. the airport is providing passengers with buses and some other ground transportation. sjc has six airlines that fly to l.a.x.

daily. one flight turned around in mid airport. the airport is warning travelers to expect delays if you are flying out. sfo is stepping up security as well in response to the shooting. at least one flight headed to l.a.x. out of oakland has been cancelled and one coming to oakland was canceled. that's a live picture of sfo right now. several others have been delayed. so if you are flying out today, be sure to check before you head to the airport. and we're following developing news in milpitas. a suspected drunk driver struck and killed a construction worker on i-680 in milpitas early this morning. cate caugiran spoke with the chp officer who says the driver could face more than a dui charge. >> all reasoning going out the window unfortunately. innocent people can die. >> reporter: a drunk driver is believed to have hit two construction workers killing one and turning his car into mangles metal on 680 in milpitas. >> there were two construction

workers that were removing a roadwork sign on the right-hand shoulder which was standing at the rear of the vehicle when this silver nissan collided into them. >> reporter: the workers in the back of the truck were hit head on and died on the interstate. the other was on the side and suffered minor injuries. the crash shut down northbound labors for the entire morning commute backing up traffic for miles as investigators took pictures, collected evidence from friday morning's crash. the driver suffered major injuries including two broken legs. chp says he was arrested on felony dui charges and could face more depending on his criminal background. >> the district attorney's office will take into consideration prior dui convictions when it comes to sentencing or pressing charges. >> reporter: chp says the victims were from vacaville and worked for statewide traffic safety and signs. they were doing contract work for caltrans and were both wearing safety gear when hit. the driver and the surviving victim were taken to san jose

regional medical center and are expected to be okay. in san jose, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> chp says the driver is identified as 20-year-old adrian valencia sanchez from gilroy. a crash on highway 101 here in san francisco sent a dump truck as you can see dangling over a guardrail. two other cars were involved in the collision near the 3rd street off-ramp. it happened around 8:00 today. it made a mess of the morning commute. the two right lanes are closed until crews can clear away all the debris. hayward police are trying to figure out who shot a women outside an apartment complex last night on sleepy hollow avenue near west tennyson road. the victim suffered life- threatening injuries and is in critical condition. nine people without a home today after a fire ripped through their san jose duplex around 5 a.m. on north 12th street. everybody got out okay. major cleaning is under way at stanford after dozens of

students got sick. the university thinks it's a norovirus outbreak. all 52 students who got sick ate at florence moore dining hall. they complained of flu-like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. four were hospitalized for dehydration. workers have been sanitizing the entire place in the complex. happening today, bart workers are deciding whether to accept their new contracts. members of the two unions are voting on the contracts that were worked out last month ending the strike. the proposals include a 15% raise over the next four years. the seiu and the atu local unions plan to count the ballots as soon as the polls close and expect to give results after 11 p.m. petitions to ban any more bart strikes are being delivered at this hour to the head of the state senate transportation committee. orinda city council member steve glazer says he has 20,000 signatures on petitions that are longer than a 10-car bart

killing a t-s-a agent. just few minutes ago - we learned there are a total of back to live pictures out of l.a.x. after gunmen opened fire this morning killing a tsa agent. just a few minutes ago we learned there are a total of 7 patients now at the hospital. officials say the gunman pulled an assault rifle out of a bag terminal 3 about 9:20 this morning, started shooting, went past the screeners

continuing to fire and an official said a gunman and officer got into a gunfight. the gunman was taken into custody. police believe there is no additional threat at the airport. police just trained for this type of scenario a couple of weeks ago. anne makovec has more on the impact of cuts on the food stamps program. >> more struggles, you got to wake day and face it. >> reporter: single mother lisa otis may run out of money. she lost her job and started getting $45 a month from the nation's food stamp program in california called calfresh and it's seeing a 5% cut. >> do i have to tell my 13-year- old, sorry, holdof on that peanut butter jelly sandwich? we have to make that loaf of bread last? you don't want to say that. >> reporter: a family of three will lose up to $29 a month for others the loss could range

"fall back" saturday night. turn the clock back one hour. high pressure in control now looks like it's going to stay that way all day long but that's it. after that we have the system dropping in out of the gulf of alaska ushering in much cooler air, clouds and the winds probably kicking up by tomorrow afternoon. so expect temperatures to take a hit as we head into the weekend. around the state though 70s in the central valley today, 60s into the monterey bay and then around our bay today what a beautiful day, 76 in san jose, 74 in milpitas, about 75 degrees in palo alto and 66 in pacifica and half moon bay.

moving into the mid- to upper 70s in many spots well inland then inside the bay, yeah, we have some gorgeous weather too, about 71 in san francisco. 74 in oakland. and 74 degrees in petaluma. next couple of days, including the weekend, yeah, big changes in the works. no rain but we'll cool down the temperatures outside. and those winds will be whipping around the bay area. there's a slight chance of showers as we look toward the end of the week. all right, mobile weather lab and roberta gonzales are at the winchester mystery maids in san jose, roberta. >> reporter: yes. you know, i returned to one of the scariest places i have ever been. in 1986 on a dare i spent a night at the winchester mystery house. it freaked me out! so i returned there today and i want to give you a little bit of a background of the winchester mystery house. it's a gem in our own backyard.

a man wearing camoflauge emi- automatic an update now in the breaking news we have been following out of los angeles. this is a live look outside l.a.x. you can see a lot of passengers are out there. and that's because terminal 3 has been evacuated at this time. earlier this morning at about 9:20, a man wearing camouflage and armed with a semi-automatic weapon opened fire inside an l.a.x. terminal and killed a tsa officer. >> at least two or three other agents were injured. the gunman has been taken into custody after he had a brief shootout with officers inside the terminal. several flights out of all three bay area airports to l.a.x. have been canceled or at least delayed. travelers warned to check the status of their flights before you head over to the airport this afternoon. we'll have much more coming up at 5:00 and how it's impacting security at sfo right now. they have really bolstered up
